Christmas Family Super North Star Activity

17 December 2021

Compass For Life

Christmas is a wonderful time of year. A time to get together and spend time with family and friends. After such a tumultuous couple of years many of us have reassessed our values and what is important to us. For many, the time of enforced separation has emphasised how important our relationships are and how much joy they bring to our lives. So this Christmas, we’re inviting you to have a go at our Christmas Family Super North Star Activity. Come together, share your dreams and aspirations and come up with a plan of how you will achieve them together.

What you will need

  • Your family
  • A couple of hours
  • An open mind
  • A sheet of paper (at least A3 size)
  • Pens
  • Coloured pencils/ crayons/ pens/ paint– whatever you can get creative with!
  • Photos/ images
  • Glitter?! (Biodegradable only!)
  • Glue

The activity

  1. Both as a family and individually, think about what you want the next 2-3 years to look like both personally and professionally/ academically.
  2. On your piece of paper, each person adds their Super North Star (your big goal/ purpose in life) and illustrates it…go big! Think drawings, photos, words…whatever inspires you and brings your dream to life.
  3. Talk about what your family Super North Star might be and add that to your paper too.

4. Now you’ve got your Super North Stars, think about the steps you will need to take to reach them. Draw a path to each of the Super North Stars and add milestones to it. What actions will you take in the next month? 6 months? Next year? What actions can you take that will move you closer to your Super North Star?

This is the beginning of your Compass For Life map!

5. Now that you have your plan, it’s important to look at how you are going to achieve it. What values do you share as a family? What values would you like to work on and live by as you move towards your Super North Star? Add them to your map.

6. In order to reach our Super North Star, we need to look after ourselves both physically and mentally. What can you do as a family to give yourselves the best chance of reaching your Super North Stars? It could be going for a walk every day; walking to school or work rather than driving; including meditation in your daily routine. Whatever works for you as a family, add it to your map.

Values

6. In order to reach our Super North Star, we need to look after ourselves both physically and mentally. Wellbeing

7. Finally, think about all of the challenges that might occur and take you off course. At Compass For Life, we call these magnets. Magnets are events, people, attitudes, ways of being that distract you or move you away from your Super North Star. They mess with your Compass and prevent it from being aligned.

By identifying them now, you can be aware of them, recognise them when they appear and take actions to remove them or avoid them.

Add your magnets to your map.

And there you have it! Your Christmas Family Super North Star Activity is complete!

We would love to hear and see how you got on and the Super North Stars that you and your family have discovered. Please share your family maps with us on Twitter and LinkedIn and don’t forget to tag us @compassforlife and include the hashtag #CompassForLife.
