Headquartered in Usk, Monmouthshire County Council employs 4,500 people. Our relationship with them is a partnership. We are currently in our second year of a multi-year arrangement that spans senior council leaders, elected cabinet members, the wider council workforce as well as teachers and pupils in both primary and secondary education. This wider programme was initiated after a senior council leader, by chance, witnessed a Compass For Life session delivered at a Brecon school.

"Compass For Life brings a challenging approach based on deep insight that forces you to confront every area of complacency."

We began by information gathering and evaluating what we found, before delivering a report to the Monmouthshire team. We always design a programme around the key elements of the compass – Super North Star, Ethos, Strategist and Warrior Spirit. It becomes bespoke after the first session and the individual needs of the team become truly apparent.  As with other large organisations, we cascaded the programme down, starting with the senior leadership. It is delivered through an optimal mix of one-to-one coaching, workshops and meetings. The intensity of the workshops varies according to the audience. So a workshop for senior leaders had seven participants; for the broader leadership there were 100 participants over the course of a day; for teachers it was about 200 participants over a day; and school children would work in groups of 200 plus.

“I have been leading large complex organisations for 20 years and have never experienced anything with this rigour or impact."

The impact of our work has been game-changing. Seen as a critical friend to the top team at Monmouthshire County Council, collaboratively we have created an environment where they can reveal their real ambitions, anxieties and fears. On both a team and individual basis, they describe how they are becoming stronger, more resilient and ever more ambitious, and totally committed to their journey. The rich potential of this talented team is being realised. Compass for Life is engraining into their organisational culture and narrative. Based on the early success, Monmouthshire County Council committed to a long-term relationship which will expose nearly 20,000 people to the inspiring Compass For Life programme.

“I lead an organisation with a strong reputation and that is generally recognised as a high performer in every sector metric. I wanted to move on to a new elite standard - a standard not sought within my sector. Compass For Life has become an integral part of this journey. “Compass For Life brings a challenging approach based on deep insight that forces you to confront every area of complacency. Its creators offer a rare blend of lived experience and deep research allied with a passion for extraordinary levels of clarity. There is a methodology that is emotionally appealing and professionally stimulating, with no room for average. “I have been leading large complex organisations for 20 years and have never experienced anything with this rigour or impact. It will touch every child in our schools, every person on our payroll and reach out into the communities that we serve. “If you really want to explore elite, if you really want to look in the mirror and see the best version of you, if you are really bold enough to start the journey of high challenge and high support then Compass For Life is for you. “If you are going through the motions Compass For Life will find you out. Be very sure that you are really committed to being elite.”
